Instead of an atom dropping to the ground state on its own, in stimulated emission, an incoming photon interacts with an atom in an excited state. This incoming photon kind of "tells" the excited atom to drop down to the ground state. And when the atom does that, it releases a photon that has the same energy, direction, phase, and polarization as the incoming photon.
It’s like if you have a row of balls on a slope, and you give one ball a little nudge. That ball rolls down, and then it hits another ball, which also rolls down in the same way. In a laser, this process creates a whole bunch of photons that are all in sync with each other. They’re like a well – organized army of light particles, all moving in the same direction with the same properties.
So, how does this all work in a real – world laser? Well, first, you need a "gain medium". This is a material, like a crystal, a gas, or a semiconductor, that can have its atoms excited to a higher energy level. You use an external energy source, like an electrical current or another light source, to pump energy into the gain medium. This process is called "pumping", and it gets a lot of the atoms in the gain medium into an excited state.
Once you have a sufficient number of atoms in the excited state, you create what’s called a "population inversion". This means there are more atoms in the excited state than in the ground state. It’s kind of an unnatural situation, but it’s crucial for laser operation.
Then, you have a pair of mirrors at either end of the gain medium. One mirror is fully reflective, and the other is partially reflective. When a photon is emitted through stimulated emission, it bounces back and forth between the mirrors. With each pass through the gain medium, it stimulates more and more atoms to emit photons, and the light gets amplified.
Finally, some of the light passes through the partially reflective mirror, and that’s the laser beam that comes out. It’s a very intense, focused, and coherent beam of light. Coherent means that all the photons are in phase with each other, which is what makes the laser beam so special.
Now, why is stimulated emission so important? Well, it’s what gives lasers their unique properties. Because the photons are all the same and moving in the same direction, laser light can be focused into a very small spot. This makes lasers super useful in a whole bunch of applications.
